What is this sound?!?

Post by RobbinsJ » Thu Jan 03, 2013 3:52 am

Hey guys, Ableton noob here, still learning the ropes of the software. Desperate for some help regarding identifying and recreating a sound!

Predictably, the types of artists that led me to Ableton were James Blake, Mount Kimbie, SBTRKT etc, and there's a percussive sound which is used frequently in music by all of the above, but I just can't work out what it is! My best guess is a type of tom with various effects on it, but I really haven't a clue. Any help with identifying and emulating it would be greatly appreciated!

Examples:

Mount Kimbie - Carbonated
Present throughout as part of the beat, accompanying the kick drum. It's the sound which starts to echo and change from 0:31 to 1:24.

XXYYXX - Alone
Again, present throughout but most noticeable at the beginning. It's the tom-ish sound that comes in after the double quaver kick drums. (E.g. at 0:03)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Can provide more examples if necessary, but I'd expect this to be a fairly simply query for you DAW gods

It's pretty much like an 808 tom with a short decay/sustain/release (DSR)

You can make this type in any synth, though depending on each one's quailities it won't sound EXACTLY like it.
I would use Live's search for 808 toms and throw one of them into simpler. As far as the "echo" you're describing in the Kimbie song, that's a reverb, most likely the Live reverb.
