Hard Disk Overload Indicator

Post by thomassmith » Mon Jan 07, 2013 7:44 pm

Hi All,

I cannot render my track because the Hard Disk Overload Indicator lights up on the right side on the top of the screen.

Hard Disk Overload Indicator lights up if life wasn't able to load audio from disk in time.Hard disk overload may happen when playing or recording too many clips at the same time, or when abruptly changing the song position.

I have only one channel to play the sound I want.
The problem occurs when I want to play 10-20(piano) sounds at the same time. Ableton plays it but I cannot render the piece of music.
If I want to render 5 sounds at the same time then ableton is able to render it. But above 5 sounds Ableton is unable to render my track. Does it have anything to do with my HDD or what?

As you can see Hard Disk Overload Indicator lights up even with 2 sounds only.

wow, I haven't this one for a looong time.

Try clearing the cache (preferences> file folder> Decoding & Web Cache section)

Also check the space available on HDD, and if there's not enough, clean up the mess.

Maybe it will help.

Yeah, the way Live handles Sampler (they call it "smart printing" technology if I'm not mistaking) with "large" samples library seems to suck.
It's a shame.

what kind of hard drive does your system have? and how full is it?

also, your system doesn't have much RAM, which means that Live needs to stream the audio samples more heavily to try and keep up.

I have two HDDs dont know how many RPMs.
I have engough space on each drive. The partitions are not full at all. At least free 40GB space.
I tried to copy the file on each partition in order to solve the problem but failed.
If it is Hard Disk Overload Indicator problem how is it connected to RAM???

because with more RAM, more samples can be read in advance from disk (which is relatively slow) and cached into RAM.

with insufficient RAM, more samples need to be read in on the fly from disk, with less room for error. this will especially be a problem with big multisampled pianos and lots of polyphony.

it is also possible that defragmenting your disks might help a bit, especially if the samples were installed when the disks were badly fragmented, as the samples may be scattered across the platters...

Why not freeze and flatten your tracks? make them audio.

also optimize you programming. Are there loop clips (thus warped clips) that you could transform into a unwarped follow action that repeats itself(Play again)? Warped clips are hard on disk streaming.

I also remove all the empty audio clips in my set.

Hope this helps.

Thanks fishmonkey! You got a point there!!!

Thanks lapieuvre: I tried many solutions nothing worked.
I used only ONE channel and couldn't freeze because Ableton crashes then.(after a while)
Altogether there is one channel only.

I also tried RESAMPLING http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5P3-voXgRA
At 06:00
But Live was unable to save the audio when playing above 6 sounds at the same time.
I would need 20 sounds to be played at the same time.

Live doesn't freeze doesn't render the track and doesn't save the audio file with this resampling method either.
ALl because Hard Disk Overload Indicator lights up.
This is suck Big Time:)

Perhaps your HD is fried. Try copy your set to an external drive, save your sounds on it and try it...

it does sound like a hard drive problem, maybe the drive is failing, or maybe the filesystem is corrupt.

if you only have this problem with those piano samples, maybe there is a problem with the sample files on your disk.

as a next step i would run some disk checks/repairs...

No, the other sounds are fine. All the other projects I made are nice and work fine. Even if I have 40 channels running/playing at the same time. Say more VSTs at the same time and samples warped, plug-ins everything. Big size acapella files all work.

Never met this problem before ever.

so the exact same sounds work okay in other projects?

if so, maybe the project is corrupt?

No,no. Sorry if I made you misunderstand something.
Not the exact same sounds work okay in other projects. Different ones!

I wrote it to say my Hdds can be loadable. They can cope with many sounds and work.
But when it comes to this particular file then problem arises.
