Well i don't know if it is just my system (10.8.2), but i can't get rid of the track number "#" if the first letter of the name of the track is capitalized. funny.
So just use lowercase and then you can delete the "#". Maybe this post will save couple of minutes of head scratching for someone...

I just tried this and the # Channel reads as Bassline, not 2 Bassline. I use CTRL+R then DELETE then type in the Channel name. doesn't work.
if the first letter of the track name is lowerase, it does work.
Otherwise the track number keeps putting itself back in.

Hey, I think I've got an answer to why Live does this... Live prevents you from having the same name as the Track and the Track's first Rack. So if you've got an Instrument Rack called "Bass" and you want to call the track "Bass", Live will automatically make a new name, like "2 Bass". These names are case-sensitive, as you note.
I guess Live doesn't want to have to deal with tracks and racks of the same name. Anyway I'm not losing sleep over it!

I thought it happened if a track had more than one word, so I ended up using a dash.
It's annoying.
Thanks for pointing that out Pinklemon, didn't recognize that!
