ableton / mac mini ?

i just bought a mac mini and i cant get the resolution correct on my display,

on my pc ableton sat perfectly in place so i can see all the screen, the only option on this mac
is the make the screen even bigger which doesnt help

can any one suggest how i work this out please ?

well im not using hdmi im using the thunderbolt to vga connection,
and there are only 2 options of screen resolution available to me, way too large or too large,
