Dubstep track composition
Dubstep track composition
I'm having trouble composing my own tracks. When I do remixes of rap songs I don't have problems getting it to sound good or "flow" because Its like I have a template to go by as far as chords, beats, etc. I can come up with drums n basslines or leads but can't get them to sound good together. Just wondering how y'all produce tracks, as far as starting with drums, lead, or what. I'm also having trouble with my basslines being to heavy. Should I vary the lfo, add different notes??? Any info, tips would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dubstep track composition
Here's how I work with basslines. I have a clean sub bass in the low range, and then mix it with a bass and octave higher, and super dirty. Lot's of FM, maybe a redux, and maybe filters. Then mix to taste. And sidechain compress the bass's to the kick drum.

Are you saying the same bass (preset or synth) in a higher octave at the same time or have the bass at like C2 for a bar then up an octave to C3?
Re: Dubstep track composition
Get your bass part and use an EQ8 filter off the low-end (everything less than about 100Hz as a guideline).
Then use a sine wave (using Simpler or Operator or whatever you have) playing the same notes and using roughly the same attack/decay settings, but transposed to the sub 100Hz range, to replace the stuff you've filtered out.
It's all about keeping the sub-bass part in control while the higher part can go crazy.

Same notes for sub bass or one long note during basslines? Also is it fine if I have a vst and just make a duplicate and EQ the dupe? Thanks for the help btw!
