NIN remix

Post by sidownes » Mon Apr 25, 2005 9:57 pm

I've seen that Trent Reznor has made available 'the hand that feeds' as a garageband set for remixing. Has anyone got hold of this and could possibly make it available as a Live set or provide a link to the WAV/AIF files.
Hope I'm not being cheeky but this would be cool as and I'd be dead grateful.

i find alot of irony and contradiction in the new single.
the lyrics pretty much tell the story of why the instrumentation is the way it is.
"just how deep do you believe? will you bite the hand that feeds?"
he's talking about what an artist wants to do themselves artistically vs. what pays them $$$.

The first single on every mainstream album made by anyone in the last 10 years has no doubt been the "poppiest" offering from said albums. And "The Hand That Feeds" is not exception, but to use it as a contradictory trojan horse to deliver those lyrics.... its beautiful really. It drips with irony and its good to see that Trent is willing to acknowledge the need to contradict yourself in order to make it in the "game" he is in.

in other words, yea its poppy, which drives the sword that is those lyrics even deeper into your gut.

I was going to check that out but you have to have garage band 2, my version is 1.something or other. Anyone know if there is a free update from iLife 04 to iLife 05? I searched around but didnt find anything - not even on apples site. Software update never asks me if I want to update garage band but maybe that is because I never use it?

Any clues?

thats too bad....

i dunno i've typically found that with NIN you don't always get a great track overall... sometimes you do, and when that happens its great. However, if the instrumentation is less than great, generally the Lyrics blow me away. And vice versa.

Yeah,
I was wondering this too, do we have to pay for garage band two?
And if so, is this Apples clever ploy to have people upgrade?
Wow...

garageband 2 is a paid upgrade, but its included in iLife '05 which itself is a paid upgrade. So you get 5 apps for $79 US, not bad. I was fortunate to get it WITH my new powerbook.

if you dont have GB2, Garageband 1 and 2 format projects will open just fine in Logic Express 7 and Logic Pro 7.

I don't think its Apple's clever ploy for upgrades, but rather Trent's clever ploy to promote a single and an album (don't see it on the Apple.com front page do ya? its only on apple.com/hotnews/ and a ways down the page too).

What if we don't have Logic?

Is there an upgrade path that you know of from iLife 04 to iLife 05? Or is it 79$ regardless?

Either way I will definitely take a pass on it and wait till I get a new machine later this year.

I have iWork though. Had to get it, part of my quest to rid my machine of microsoft.

But alas, I digress.......

That's what I thought too, but my GarageBand (v1.1) opened NIN's file OK.

Check out the NIN site - there are links to forums there. One of them started a forum to post remixes on and take votes, and I did see a link to somewhere that you can get the straight out wav/aiffs from if you don't have GB.

Not that I'm advocating breaking the law, you understand. Given that the GB file is basically the individual ProTools tracks turned into 'apple loop' format, and the file is released "free", this says a lot about where Mr T.R. stands as an artist.

I haven't really been a NIN fan in a long time, but I like PR things like this. Communication with the artist and such. A few years ago there was a contest from Bungalow records to remix the German soundtrack composer Peter Thomas. There was one disk that had remix tracks form Stereolab, John McEntire, Stock, Hausen, and Walkman, Coldcut, Mr Scruff and others but on the inside it offered a chance to enter a remix track and win a trip to St. Tropez or something to hang out with the composer and get your work featured on the next remix thingy, but alas, I don't think it ever got released.
Anyway, great story i know.
Fan involvement, yeah.
Although it would be cool just to hear some no name hotshot put Trent Reznor's dick in the dirt, ya know.
