hi everyone. i've been reading a book recently called mixing secrets for the small studio, by mike senior and it's really opened my eyes to a lot of flaws in my approach to making professional sound mixes. i have however found a few things a little tricky to grasp. for one phantom imaging in stereo systems. i understand that if you play a sound louder through one speaker in comparison to the other your brain will place the phantom sound source closer to that particular speaker. however i was trying to make decent subs for my bass recently and the way to go with that, is apparently to have your sub in mono and add width to the higher bands in your bass. however!!!
how do dimension expanders/stereo spreaders work?! i mean, i understand how the source of sound can be panned in the stereo image, as i explained earlier, but how do they make things sound wider? and for that matter how do you process sub in mono when your playing it through two speakers?!
any help would be much appreciated. but i recommend the book i've actually stopped producing until i feel i'm competent in the knowledge to do so professionally.
