Multi-Channel MIDI Files and Live 9 Browser

Post by toneburst » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:57 am

When viewing multi-channel MIDI files in the old (pre-9) Live file-browser, it used to be possible to audition the individual tracks, and drag them individually as clips into the Session or Arrangement views. This doesn't seem to be the case in the redesigned Live 9 browser. Does anyone know if there is a way to bring back this old functionality? All I seem to be able to do now is drag the entire MIDI file to the Session/Arrangement, which creates tracks for each one. I can see this would be useful sometimes, but more often, I want to extract a single track.

I managed to work around the problem by importing the MIDI file into Live 8, and exporting each track as a separate MIDI clip. Not ideal, though. I still think having multi-channel MIDI files show up in the browser as a folder, allowing the component tracks to be imported individually is much better. Maybe Ableton will re-implement that in a future update.

It would be cool if Live was able to export multi-channel MIDI files as well.

This isn't exactly rocket science but can be extremely useful when exporting projects to General MIDI synths for instance.
