fishman triple play midi pickup + ableton?

Post by frozenintime » Mon Jun 03, 2013 7:06 pm

hey all

i'm seeing some contradictory stuff about how well the new fishman triple play midi guitar pickup works with ableton.

some say it's great, others say it "doesn't work," at least with live 9.

can anyone explain in greater detail?

if i had to guess, i'd assume that the pickup passes MIDI signal to ableton without any problems, but that combining ableton with the triple software (which allows one to create splits on the fretboard, etc) is where the problems lie.

but i have no idea, everything i've read is quite vague.

for what it's worth, i'm using ableton 8 for the moment.

any info would be appreciated!

it seems audio to MIDI is still "a step away"

regardless of Ableton or Fishman efforts

hey there

thanks for the reply!
maybe i wasn't clear enough, but audio to midi isn't something i'm looking for - just midi to midi, i suppose!

i've read a bit of early adopters of the triple play saying it doesn't work well with ableton, and i'm just trying to figure out what that might mean.

thanks again!

The pickup you are looking at is converting audio to midi. What sowhoso is saying is that that isn't reliable technology at this point, period. That's actually bullshit from what I'm reading on the KVR forum. It looks like these thing works very well from an audio to midi standpoint. Live 9 has been a little shaky with plugins so far so that may be why you are hearing that it isn't a reliable marriage yet. As more updates come out this will probably get solved. As a controller I imagine it probably works just fine. There isn't any obvious reason that it shouldn't. I bet using it as a plugin with the additional controls is where people are having reliability issues. I would suggest posting questions on the KVR forum as well as here.

for audio to midi to work "reliably" the audio has to be SUpER DUpER clean and/or relatively devoid of upper harmonics (if you're converting harmony)

and that's actually no bullshit

try it yourself

my question really isn't how well the tripleplay (or any midi pickup) works on its own, just how it interfaces with ableton and whether i can change patches/presets/programs in the tripleplay software via ableton. that's all! :)

hey all

i picked up a tripleplay to use with ableton. it passes MIDI signal just fine, but i'm wondering if anyone out there has some experience with the two together, specifically using the tripleplay software plugin within ableton. i have a question or two about integrating them.

thanks!

Hey frozenintime,
I also have a Triple Play for a few days now. What questions are you talking about?

Best,

I have just installed my Triple Play. Live can see it as a plug-in
My (probably stupid) question is, can I play Live's internal sounds, too with the Triple Play?

How do I do that?

Thanks and cheers,
Uli

Load an instrument into a MIDI track and set the tracks MIDI from to Fishman Tripleplay and arm the track for recording.

Correct. I haven't had the time since I got mine to really delve into it all but it works as advertised as far as I can see.
