Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
I'm a bit of an Ableton Live "Looping noob" (using Live's looper plugin)....but a seasoned Loop-ist overall, and reasonably familiar with Live as a DAW. Thanks in advance for any help.
At 7:01 in this Rheyne video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMSG4o66ZqU, Rheyne starts Live with an audio drum loop, using Live's "looper plugin" (at least that's how its set up in his amazing RheyneJammer Live Set)...and then says at 7:10 in the video: "If I wanted to I could resample [the audio loop playing in the looper plugin] into the drum audio channel if I want". He then turns to his APC20, and seems to begin recording the drum loop, from the Looper Plugin, into a clip slot on another channel.
I'm clear on the original recording of the drum audio loop into Live's Looper Plugin...but a bit lost on how he then 're-samples" that loop into a clip slot on another channel. What audio routing would I need to have to accomplish this? Is the routing done inside of Live (in the channel I/O settings), or is it routed externally? I have been dragging my audio loops with a mouse onto other slots in other channels...but he's "recording" them in real time???
Any advice on how to resample an "already recorded playing loop" in Live's looper plugin, onto another tracks audio clip slot....would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Yes you already figured it out. set up a channel to receive audio from the looper and record clips from the looper.
Re: Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
that also solves the problem of Looper's inability to separate passes
loop...record/bounce...another loop...record/bounce
nice one!

Re: Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
Thanks so much for these responses! I do understand that I can set up a channel to receive audio from another channel (the one containing the Looper plugin).
I'm still somewhat unclear tho.... So is it a one looper channel to one audio/clip channel relationship, only? What I mean is.... Is there a way to set up a record channel (for realtime recording of clips coming from loopers) that can receive its audio from multiple looper channels? Or, vice versa, have one looper channel route to multiple clip channels?
The point of this is...Im contemplating how to set up a Live Set Template for *real time* looping, using both the looper plugins AND clips, and the ability to re-sample loopers onto clips in real time, so I can re-use the loopers, is paramount. But.....the way it appears to me (which is what I think/hope I am missing) is that I need to load up a BUNCH of channels, one looper, one corresponding clip channel, etc. etc.....rather than having some kind of matrix routing or grouping where I can layer multiple clips coming off the loopers....the key being....all in real time, without having to use my mouse to change the audio input/output routing in Live. So I'm seeking the best work-flow or setup of Live....or perhaps its the best controller setup?.....so I can do this while performing, without heading to the computer. This is what I see Rheyne doing....I'm just wondering about his (or similar) template Live Set, or controller mappings, to accomplish this with maximum flexibility in real time.
Thanks again if anyone cares to comment!

Re: Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
I understand yr pain in this. To keep the looper(s) in one channel, some people set up an effects rack with multiple loopers using chains, and then they select a chain/looper with a cont controller.
I do something similar only without chains - I have 2 differently configured loopers in series and a switch that toggles one off and the other on - the aduio goes to the master and also to a track for recording clips when required.
However, another option is to try the excellent Session Looper (M4L)

Because you can use it to record loop passes as different clips

So I assume you have two loopers in series on the same track, the output of which is set to the Master. Then you have set up separate audio tracks, the input of each is set to receive from the output of the Looper(s) track?chris vine wrote: I do something similar only without chains - I have 2 differently configured loopers in series and a switch that toggles one off and the other on - the aduio goes to the master and also to a track for recording clips when required.
And you switch between the two loopers using some controller toggle switch that you setup with midi or key bindings? (can you be more specific about how you set that up?)
Can both loopers play at the same time? Or does one have to be off for audio to pass through to the master on that track?
Thanks so much for the heads up on the Session Looper...that looks very interesting too!

Re: Understanding Looping in Live Rheyne style...
yes that's exactly it. I guess there's no limit to the number of tracks you want to set up, depending on yr level of madness. I only have one these days, but the Session Looper is pretty cool for multiple copies of the same length loop and separate takes. There may be another more elegant way of doing it but that's what ended up working for me in my setup. Got to try to keep it handle-able in the head dept otherwise it gets hard to play.
Yep, one button toggles the on/off state of the two loopers. Once the button has been assigned, manually (ie with the mouse) switch one on and the other off, then they'll toggle between each other. One of the reasons I put two next to each other was to be able to check them visually, easily, so I also assigned a midi button to the Looper Track name, so I can select that track and view the device bar when needed.
The two loopers have different configurations depending on what I want to play with, but the main switches of rec/overdub/play/stop/clear etc are the same for both loopers.
I have not even tried (well, maybe by accident) to run both loopers at the same time, the Live looper effect was buggy as hell in the early days of Live 8 and I was using it in a live theatre piece with no room for error. Some users still say it is buggy.....def can get weird sometimes with cache of the samples (? out of my depth there
) but the audio seems to pass through both without any problem.
