How to play midi loops with no metornome then set proj bpm?

I come up with more fluid sounding stuff when I don't play to a metronome. In Live 9 how do you play a midi drum pattern for example, then loop part and set the project bpm to the exact bpm of your midi loop so that you can program stuff around that loop or use tempo sync'd effects and have them match the loop tempo? Is there an easy way to do this or are you forced to play to a metronome?
