Buying an Old Version of Ableton Live

Post by Rane » Tue Oct 29, 2013 12:27 am

So there's this guy that's got version 4 of Ableton Live. I thought it might be a good base to upgrade from (I don't have Ableton yet), however he doesn't seem to know if it's been registered or not.

If I can't confirm whether or not it's been registered, and he doesn't have access to the original account, the disks/license key are probably not worth anything are they?

Thanks!

They wouldn't be worth anything. This happened with me after buying A version of Komplete on Ebay.
But Im sure there would be some way for him to access his account even if it meant him calling ableton.

if you're serious about buying it... have him create an Ableton account for you with an email you provide him. when he does there will be a prompt for the license. if it's in use it should say that it's already registered and the question will be answered.

this link has offline authorization that only goes back to version 6 https://www.ableton.com/en/account/ (click on "authorize offline" link)
so it might be a non-issue anyway

then again... all of this could probably be handled via support.

any way you slice it... i hope you're not paying much, if anything, for Live 4.

Thanks for the help guys. I was hoping to get the serial # for about $50 and just upgrade right away from there, as it would save quite a bit of money vs buying outright, but unfortunately the guy checked online and it's already been registered, and he don't seem to know who the original owner was. Oh well. I'll just keep saving my money.

why don't you get a copy with a controller?

the NI Luanchpad is pretty cheap and there quite a few others that come with Live. then, you'd have a much more recent copy of Live, a controller, AND your platform to upgrade from... WIN.
