Nelson Mandela memorial interpreter 'was a fake'

Post by Galt » Wed Dec 11, 2013 10:22 pm

A mystery South African man who acted as a sign-language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service was a “fraud” who simply made “childish hand gestures” for hours as he stood on stage.

Deaf groups say the man, who has not yet been identified, made no sense in any language to those relying on him around the world, and did not seem to know the recognised signs for South Africa, Mr Mandela’s clan name Madiba, President Jacob Zuma or former President Thabo Mbeki.

As a result, they say, he had the effect of marginalising the deaf community, which was “contrary to everything Mandela fought for”.

Well let’s just bring him back to life and have a do over. Anything less than that would be unsatisfactory to those truly devastated by this outrageous act of insensitivity.

We must let the deaf community know they’ve been heard. And then try to explain to them what heard means.

Hahaha wow I love my country.
This fraud was also seen next to Jacob Zuma a while back when he was singing the "Kill the Boer" song.

Reality is truly stranger than fiction, and I would read a well written account of this guys life over a Charles Dickens novel any day

Seems many deaf people are not seeing the funny side of this.

Doesn't seem to be offensive to deaf people to me. It would be just as funny if someone was doing the French translation in English with an inspector clouseau accent.
