Unexplained CPU usage

Post by BBR » Mon Jan 06, 2014 8:42 pm

I've found that since updating to 9.1 I have really random CPU spikes while nothing is happening. I can freeze most of my labor-intensive tracks and still be plagued with a standby reading of 60-80% cpu "usage" (I know Live's interpretation of that is a little more complicated). This jumps to >100% when I press play and is obviously really bad for my workflow. I have ASIO4ALL set to the largest buffer size, and have made sure that no large programs are running in the background while I'm in Live.

The weirdest thing is that if I wait approximately 5-7 minutes, things return to normal with only about 4% cpu usage in standby, and regular playing ability is restored. These spikes come and go, but the way it's able to be resolved by simply waiting it out is really frustrating.

Any clues as to what could be causing it?

This only ever happened in 8 when I had too much stuff going on and increasing the buffer size and freezing tracks helped it, but not now.

Not sure. Here, 9.1 runs about the same as 8.41

Get this if you don't have it already:

Might not help you in any way, but just in case it will give you a rundown on realtime audio performance.

What happens if you use the latest real driver for your soundcard and not asio4all?
