Confusion over the A minor scale?

Post by debrice » Mon Jan 20, 2014 2:20 am

Got an issue with music theory here. According to most things I read on the internet, it says that the A minor consists of A,B,C,D,E,F,G, with the "harmonic" A minor having a G# instead of G.

However, Ableton Push's scales tool is laying it out with G# at the base and then including A#, C#, D# as well as G, F, C.

I'm sure Ableton is correct, but can anyone explain to me this difference?

You will find some scales named differently depending on who you ask. So in answer to your topic question, yes there ends up being confusion.

A natural minor: ABCDEFG

A jazz melodic minor: ABCDEF#G#

A classical melodic minor: is jazz melodic minor when ascending, natural minor when descending.

A harmonic minor: ABCDEFG#

There are many other minors - most commonly derived from starting on different notes of the major scale, but also the jazz melodic minor scale, especially in jazz.

Here's a starting point:

An A minor scale isn't going to start with A#

Something is awry

That's Ab major. The Ab is directly below the A on push, and both do start with an A.

But I don't know why you'd be getting a major when you are saying you have it set to minor.

Yep, looks like Ab major to me. God, I hate computer tools that do things like tell you your scale has both G and G#!!!!

There is such a thing as a G# major scale, too...but it has an F## rather than a G:

G# A# B# C# D# E# F##
