Sudden Latency of DI and other issues as of recent update...

Post by gorskkr » Thu Feb 06, 2014 3:04 am

I just upgraded (and reluctantly so) to Mavericks and I'm on: OS X 10.9.1. I'm also running Live 9.1.1 32 bit. and using a macbook pro 15" retina SSD.

I used it for the first time last night to work on an unfinished project. Everything was going fine until I decided to record my electric bass DI (I've done this countless times with both my bass and electric guitar). Everything was set up exactly as it were before, however, this time I had massive latency on my bass signal... I messed around with buffer size but nothing had an effect. I actually recorded myself and the bass was the same signal coming out of my monitors.

I've never had this problem before and it continues to happen tonight which is a shame bc I need to lay some bass down on this track.

I've also noticed that I've been getting more 'spinning beach ball wheels"- something i'm not used to seeing and I got the macbook back in august. Additionally, now I'm having the reoccurring problem of when I switch over to iTunes, my audio automatically switches off my monitors and onto my onboard macbook speakers. I remove the USB cable of my audio interface (Focusrite Saffire 6) and insert it again but to no avail.

AGAIN, all of these things are only occurring now since this upgrade. I'm dying her quite honestly as I'm in the middle of a project that's just starting to take off. Please help!

I solved the monitor issue with itunes... Evidently the Mavericks update messes with your sound preferences on the computer. I had to go into preferences, click sound, and then make the input and output of itunes to my audio interface. These settings obviously changed with the update...

but yea... if anyone could give a thought on the latency issues that would be great. I can't record my guitar or bass bc the signal is wretched no matter what buffer size I use... THANKS

Hey guys thanks for hanging in there with me while I have a nervous breakdown. Here's what I found on apple discussion board:

"Focusrite say their products are 10.9 compatible.. with the exception of the the Saffire 6 USB. They are hoping to release updated drivers for that model later in the year..."

^^This was posted on Oct 2013. So I'm assuming if I just update my Focusrite Saffire 6 I should have this problem go away? Shite, I hope there's an update....

They released an updated driver in December...I have not upgraded to Mavericks yet mostly because of the audio interface. Let me know if the new driver fixes your issue, definitely curious. Do you have the USB 1.1 or 2.0 Saffire 6?

I have the USB 2.0 version. For the heck of it I updated anyway on the Focusrite site and I still have the same problem. This is a real bummer... I don't want to have to go out and buy a new audio interface bc ableton and mavericks are double teaming me right now...

Here's what it sounds like when I play my bass/guitar (I also plugged in my Microphone and same thing!):
My signal ping pong delays from left to right, there's also an accompanied click at the end of each delay as it pans back and forth on my monitors.

again, my buffer size has always fine no issues since I've owned live... This is ONLY now happening since i ran live 9.1.1 with mavericks 10.9.1. Shoot me now...!

I don't have time machine activate on my MBP so i can't revert back to Mountain Lion. What do I need to do? I can't just now permanently not use the inputs on my Saffire 6 USB 2.0....

Also, when Monitoring is set to "Auto" my signal is perfect although it only comes out of my left monitor speaker. When I switch monitoring to "In" (which is what it needs to be in for recording a line level instrument), I get the massive delay and latency issues.

Seriously, someone please help! :?

sounds like you have selected a stereo channel for recording, you should be able to select mono if you have them selected in preferences. ie 2 x stereo inputs and/or 4 mono inputs.
If you audio box has a monitor in/monitor out knob set it to half way so you can hear instrument with out live, then in live set monitor to off. that way you don't hear the signal after it has been through live and has latency.
you should really be monitoring through you audio card, hope this makes sense

@DUB

I appreciate your response, and I think I know what you're saying. However, wouldn't that just be a work-around for the problem that I have?

As I've said, this problem just started with the upgrade to Mavericks 10.9. Prior, to the update, I've recorded hundreds of times with my electric and bass guitar with absolutely no issues. I personally want to get to the bottom of the problem.

As it stands... I have the most up to date versions of:
-Ableton Live 9.1.1 32 bit
-Max4L
-Mavericks 10.9.1
-Focusrite Saffire 6 USB 2.0

Everything works fine in ableton besides the issue with my instrument signal from my audio interface (whether I'm plugging in my bass, electric guitar, or my microphone XLR cable). Let me state again, that it's not so much latency as it is the sound of a ping pong delay with the feedback cranked up. I pluck a bass string and it will ping pong left to right and pop at the end of each pan. This problem stays the exact same no matter buffer size is applied...

*Ableton support responded to me saying it was buffer size. I have since messaged them back saying my reasons for why it isnt the case. I'm awaiting reply....

**Focusrite has not yet responded and I've sent them all the info they need.

I KNOW ILL CONQUER THIS SOON!!!

YO WHAT UP DER FELLAS!!! Problem FIXED!!!

So here's what fixed my issue... Ableton told me to switch my audio output in preferences off my audio interface and onto my onboard laptop speakers to see if the problem persists. I did and the problem continued on my laptop speakers. But here's the weird thing.... I switched the main audio output back to my Saffire 6, and my signal was back and beautiful and wondrous and coming out of both speakers!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the problems I incurred when updating latest Mavericks version to my Live 9.1.1.....:

-My iTunes preferences changed to sound coming out my laptop speakers (not my Saffire 6). e.g. i would be working on a live set in ableton and sound would come out of my KRK monitors. I would finish working on my set and Id switch over to iTunes to play a track, sound would then play off my Macbook pro onboard speakers. I had to change this, at first i was wigging out...

-Super delayed signal on my audio interface inputs; made it impossible to record electric guitar, bass, and Mic XLR. Issue fixed but by no significant rhyme or reason... Makes me wonder...

-Regular beach balls?!? Seriously, I've had this 8 gig ram Macbook Book Pro 15" retina since I bought it Aug 2013. I've pretty much rarely ever seen beach balls. Now with Mavericks 10.9.1 I have frequent beach balls. Now I will say it hasn't exactly impeded my workflow, its still annoying and pain in da arse to look at. I'm like, "You betta than this MBP!!!"

But yea... Ableton responded to me and was quick in follow up. Focusrite has yet to respond to anything... Hmm maybe their customer support is inferior to that of glorious ableton. all hail our gracious music production software overlords!
