MIDIoverLAN saves the day

Post by thejone » Fri May 27, 2005 10:27 am

Just finished a 2 hour jam session between my Tibook and my mates PC laptop, with absolutely no syncing issues.
After scratching our heads for a while we worked out how to get MIDIoverLAN working!
It stayed in rocksolid sync for the whole time, even while we had extra midi inputs connected
I don't know if it's worth the $160+ USD but considering it worked I may have to part with the cash.
So there you go a story with a happy end.
Fingers crossed it holds up at the gig tomorrow.

Why pay 160 for a feature that is in the operating system? (Osx 10.4)
Figuring all the options you have now, there must be a cheaper solution to run it on pc.

Don't think there is , as all the midi over lan applications are propriety and hardly crossplatform (except midioverlan cp) . Both computers need to run the same midi over lan application in order to work together .

Think the futire lies in OSC implementation or at least in midi->osc-midi wrappers that are crossplatform

Yup, OSC seems like the path to go...
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.

could you not write a midi>osc>midi patch in MAX? i know you have to do that with the lemur control device.

Well for a start I'm syncing mac and PC, but totally the Mac-Mac sync is great it even calculates the latency!
In the mean time till OSC gets properly implimented on Mac and PC then MidiOverLAN is a great stepping stone, and an expensive one![/list]
