.als files opening with an older version of ableton

Post by mono point » Sat Mar 08, 2014 1:24 pm

Hi All,

I have recently downloaded a version of Ableton Live 9, I have files that I have created with the new program.

I am ashamed to say it but for around a week I used a pirated copy of Ableton Live to see if it was really for me.

I fully deleted everything to do with the old pirated version of Ableton, even following the instructions by Ableton for a complete removal.

Now every time I go to open an .als it somehow opens in the old version? I have no idea why it does this. I have gone over the old files to see I have completely removed them, with what I think as success.

I am on a MacBook Pro so my idea to fix this was to go to 'Get Info' and change the 'Open With' program. It gives me the option to change however continuously reverts back to the older version of Ableton.

I realise this is quite long winded but surely somebody must have gone through the same problem before...

Thanks for any help in advance.

Nice Poe reference. Yeah the Ableton Forum is my place of confession.

Found a tutorial on resetting the 'open with' menu with a few lines in Terminal.

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

Still no luck, but it seems to have worked for others...

haha, excellet Poe perspective on it.

So I gather you own Live 9 now after removing the pirated copy, and you had a legit Live 8 before?

Can't you just run Live 9 from its executable or shortcut and then open your set from within it? Or am I misunderstanding your situation?

Never had Live 8, just decided to test Live 9 then bought it.

Yeah it's no problem opening live and then opening the .als file. It's just a pain that I've removed everything from before but yet it's still kicking around. It just annoys me when I wanna open a .als file normally and it'll try to open in the pirated live 9 suite edition instead of my bought version.

One is intro version being a teal coloured icon and the other is a grey icon.
