MIDI performance with Keys
Ok so I love to produce but lately I've been getting into performing a little bit and of course it's awesome. My concern is I write many tracks with a brass sounding lead for kind of funky /or jazzy emphasis. Would you consider it lame or just weird if a dj or an "electronic artist" jammed out saxophone on his midi keys controller? I'm a life long piano /synth player and I'm just looking for some feedback of the concept. Thanks all!! I know of the akai ewi for wind instruments but just curious with keys voicing other real instruments

Just make sure you listen to recordings of your sessions so you can really get an idea for of you're doing it tastefully. It is so easy to get caught up and ruin a vibe with either goofy riffs or accidentally soloing too loudly or who knows.
Do what you want to do. But make sure the thing you imagine you're doing is close to how it is being portrayed to the audience.

This is what all keyboard players do when playing live.Dbrown36UT wrote:Ok so I love to produce but lately I've been getting into performing a little bit and of course it's awesome. Yes I couldn't agree more. Taste, I find, is absolutely everything with a solo or melody lick. Proper breaks in play really can sell the sax sound (player taking a breathe). As long as I'm not booed off stage for "faking the funk" playing a verbatim sax sound on midi keys, I'm happy. Thanks for your response!!yur2die4 wrote:Just make sure you listen to recordings of your sessions so you can really get an idea for of you're doing it tastefully. True haha. I'm more comfortable tho in a live setting playing what tones naturally feel like they would come from a Synth or keyboard bc well the visual is on point for live performance. Having said that, I guess imitation voicing is really is done all the time with keys. Thanks!estibi wrote:This is what all keyboard players do when playing live.Dbrown36UT wrote:Ok so I love to produce but lately I've been getting into performing a little bit and of course it's awesome.
