Is Ableton Live 9 instrument selection different to 8?

Hi guys.
So currently I am running Ableton Live Suite 8 for a live setup both band and hybrid dj set. The biggest issue with 8 is changing instruments on my keyboard while playing. Currently i'm using the korg kontrol49 and using the pads to turn on and off each instrument in my channel by literally disabling the instrument and not using the chain selector. I do this because the chain selector does not turn instruments off and therefore eats up all the CPU and RAM (not great when playing live).
Anyway I was wondering if anybody out there is using Live9 in a similar situation and whether Live 9 has made a better way to do this?
Any info advice would be greatly appreciated.
