Reason+ABLETON=Pro Tools
Hi -
I want to program drums and keys in REASON 3.0 and slave LIVE to trigger some guitar samples I made over the REASON drumbeat. I would then like to REWIRE all these tracks into PRO TOOLS for vocals and mixdown.
I am brand new to these programs. I used to use an MPC4000 and recorded on ENSONIQ PARIS.
Any tips please? Thx in advance!
Frank

I use all three, basically what I do is write everything with Reason rewired into Live (vocals too, Live should see your digi hardware), once I am up to a point where I am ready to start mixing I record all my reason tracks and record all of my external synths/fx to tracks + render any internal fx (Live, VST, AU) to tracks. Quit everything, launch PT's, rewire live into protools and record all of my tracks in for mixdown.
This is a bit of a workaround but offers these advantages:
-When Live is rewired into protools it has no VST support, so you need VST wrapper to use any of the many free vst's in your setup.
-No remote control in protools, so unless you have one of those very expensive proprietary digidesign control surfaces you're mixing with the mouse.
-When protools is host you cannot rewire Reason into Live and also no midi from Live to Reason.
There are several other reasons that come to mind but that should get you started, if none of these things matter to you then rewire everything into PT's and enjoy.

Thanks a lot for the info.
Now a few more questions, please.
1: What is VST Wrapper and where can I get it? Is this freeware?
2: Do you record into Protools and then transfer the files into LIVE?
Personally, vocals are the last thing I record. I do the drums, keys and any other guitar parts, samples etc. After this I record the vocals and start the mixdown process. I might add some production sprinkles here and there and we're done.
3: Do you use LIVE as the master (IE: Slave REASON to LIVE)?
4: The reason I am interested in LIVE is because I protentially wont have to use RECYCLE to format samples before flying them into REASON. Apparently, LIVE can fit a sample to any BPM.
5: HELLLP!!!
I am going to attack Reason now. I look forward to your thoughts.

Your taking on to much if you are new to the software. If your not careful you could find yourself not making music and spending to much time learning software. Theres nothing likea bit of kit you dont know how to work fluently to totally stop creativity in its tracks.
I suggest you learn one program and ask questions about one that particular one. since you are on the Ableton forum that seems like a good one to start.

I agree!!! I have spent the last 7 years learning software that will "make it all work" and making no music. Then I found Live and now I am just playing and writing. IMO just focus on Live, use Reason for what it is, (I only use it as a vvirtual rack of goodies since buying Live) and when you get the Flo going, a few file folders full of stuff you are happy with move on to PT. Ableton has the best tutorials and the best Forum I have found. Good luck.lesiuresuit wrote:Your taking on to much if you are new to the software. dudes! what up?
reason is slave to live, man.
i need heat sinks in my brain, cause i'm attempting
something like this too. i use reason with live
and i still am trying to figure out which app to use to use
as a sound file editor, since the edit button in live
prompts me to choose an app.
is there a post about that one in here?

your all punked
What do you need protools for?
I find Reason rewired into Live is great.
It's not an editor, but it allows you to quickly rex, tweak, and reload into
Reason, where you can then rearrange beats and turn a simple audio loop
into a long more fluid section.

As for a sound editor. Go into your preferences. Under one of the tabs there should be an option for an external sound file editor. Point to it with the browse button, save and exit and you are done. I use Sound Forge 7.0a as my main editor for now. May move to Adobe Audition 1.5 perhaps.AKutcher wrote:reason is slave to live, man.
