Might be a stupid question..

Post by eannpi » Wed Jul 09, 2014 5:42 pm

Hi, apologies if this has been asked before or the answer is really obvious and has been staring in my face the whole time, but I have a question which is difficult for me to phrase being that i am not the most technically minded of ableton users out there...

Imagine if you will that you have two audio channels where say for example, you would like have a 16 bar loop of a sample that you've duplicated then split so the first half of the sample would be in channel 1 panned to the left and the second one would be on channel 2 panned to the right.

is there a way to do this so that when splitting the sample you can split the bits you want on both channels and then select ones that aren't next to each other to delete simultaneously?

in most other windows applications the holding the control key while selecting them would be the way to achieve this... how would one do this in windows ableton?

Also while I am here, I have the problem that the volume function in the drum pad instrument when one is buiding loops does not work, so say if I want the same kick drum hitting at different volumes through the loop I would have to creat a seperate drum pad for one of the kicks and turn it down or up... Anyone know what might be causing this and how i can get that volume function to work?
Thanks :)

Not sure about your first question.

As for the second, have you tried automating the volume parameter for that one drum pad? First, expand the drum rack so you can see the controls for the particular sample/pad. Then show the envelopes, and use the automation to get that pad's volume to change as you want it to throughout the clip.

I must say I don't understand either question or what the OP is trying to do...

For the first one you need to edit the clips in arrangement view, then consolidate them back into one audio clip, then bring back into session view.

The 2nd one I think you need to understand the Velocity parameter in Simpler or Sampler. That's how you choose the volume of each hit with each midi note.

Not exactly. The velocity parameter(s) in Simpler and Sampler (which has quite a few parameters dealing with velocity) determine how SENSITIVE the device is to velocity.

You chose the velocity of each hit in the area below the notes in the midi clip frame - those little lollipop-y things.

Right, I could have worded it better. Key word: 'understand' because he never mentioned velocity, so he'll find out he doesn't need to use multiple cells of the same sample just to have different volumes, but just use the midi notes.
