Best MIDI Interface for Ableton & Push w/External Devices

Post by Concept_DC » Fri Jul 11, 2014 3:24 pm

Hello all, I'm new to the forum here and would like to know if any of you can offer some advice based on your own experience as to what the best MIDI interface is to use in conjuction with Ableton & Push while playing external instruments; i.e., rack synths/samplers. I'm using an Apple MacBook Pro w/Retina Display running Mavericks and I'm having a really bad experience trying to play my external MIDI devices with Push and Ableton while using both a MOTU MTP AV and a MOTU MIDI Express XT. No matter what I've tried, I'm still in random stuck note hell (at least one every 15-30 sec.)! I've tried two different powered USB 2.0 hubs, I've tried multiple USB and MIDI cables, and various configurations....no luck! Any advice/knowledge pertaining to this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Only Notes stuck problems? no timing issues?

Note stucks sounds to me as Push velocty sensitivity issue.

Afraid not, I've played with the User sensitivity settings as well; however, it definitely seems to be a note off issue. From what I gather, it's either a driver problem pertaining to the MIDI interface, an Apple Mavericks/USB 3.0 issue, or an Ableton issue. Trying to narrow it down...I've spoken to both Ableton and MOTU tech. support and read various forum posts (here and elsewhere) and it's a known issue. The older posts that I've seem all appear to be several months old and they never really get to the bottom of the issue, or explained what works (aside from the USB 2.0 powered hub, or removing the MOTU MIDI interface in some cases), so I was wondering who out there has successfully solved this issue, or is playing their external MIDI gear with the Push and what their setup entails. I would love to keep my MOTU MIDI interfaces in the mix if possible...been using their products for nearly 20 years.

can you reproduce the problem with another controller...like a regular keyboard controller?

I finally resolved this issue! First, I left my setup as it was and tried a different controller (Oxygen 25 via USB) and I was still getting multiple stuck notes every 15-30 sec., so I officially ruled out the Push itself and the Push User settings. Therefore, I decided to try a new MIDI interface (iConnectMIDI4+), which thankfully works like a charm and gives me a few new capabilities in my setup. No more stuck notes and I can finally focus on making music again! =)
