Why does Live 4 cost $100 more?
Why does it cost $100 more to buy Live 4 on this website, than it does if I drive over to Guitar Center down the street?
Is Guitar Center selling the same thing?
On the Ableton site here, they say if you activate Live 4 between now and the release of Live 5, you get Live 5 for free. If I buy Live 4 from Guitar Center, will I still get the free upgrade to Live 5 when it comes out? Or is that offer only good on website purchases?

well you have List price and you have Street price.
its the same reason you can get a car that is $18,000 MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) for $15,000
the product is nooooo different.
GC buys Live 4 for a specific price from M-Audio (distributor of Ableton).
They can either sell for the List price $499, or they can compete with the Sam Ash's and sell for $399. $399 is probably the lowest they can go to still be within a reasonable profitable margin and still compete. Also some dists and manufacturers won't allow advertised prices below a certain price. In Ableton's case MSRP is $499, and perhaps the lowest advertised price for resellers is $399.
buy it at GC if you want, you'll also be paying tax though.

actually, its a lot more walmart-esque than that.
Guitar Center/Musicians Friend (same Company) has the selling power to control and demand prices of products. They say "fuck ableton, if they dont want to sell the product for the price we name, then we wont sell it." Much like walmart.
They control the pricing in their stores. No one gets the product carried, if the company doesnt cave to GC/MF's demands.
In fact, GC controls almost EVERY aspect of production. Much like Walmart or Home Depot, they can say, "well you need to use cheaper raw materials," like lower alloy metals, or thinner plastics. With software, that doesnt matter much. But with hardware, it does.
so, the reason its cheaper? because you are feeding a monster that is eating the industry alive. You are enabling GC's buying power. Im not saying dont buy it, just know what you are contributing too.

Fuck Guitar Center.

Buy it here and get a free M-Audio O2. If you live outside of New York you'll have it shipped to you and save the tax.
Guitar Center treats their employees like sub-human SHIT. Don't feed that evil machine.
