Ableton should create a new version of the instrument rack and the effects rack for wrapping VSTs and Ableton plug-ins that automap to a designated control surface.
The rack should allow for 64 Macro Controllers that can be mapped the same way that ordinary racks are. The rack will also save what profile it's associated with in the Preferences pop-up. The profile will allow the rack to takeover the controller profile when it's active. You would basically have two profiles "My Device" and "My Device with automapped racks enabled."
When the automapped profile is selected, the associated controller becomes automapped to the racks macros as specified in that rack. There should also be a "lock" button that secures the controller to that specific rack even if the user clicks off of the rack. When the automap profile is in use, the controller loses the ability to be mapped as usual. It only functions when a rack that has been built for it is selected.
I think this would satisfy the problem of wanting to be able to assign midi maps to device/VST once and being able to recall them in any project. The same plug-in or set of plug-ins could be wrapped in an unlimited number of ways depending on the needs of the user. A plug-in could be wrapped for live use versus studio use for example. The macros would still follow the same rules as the macros in their counterparts.
The end user would be able to create very complex instruments or effects racks that could be dropped into any project and still retain all the functionality of its original mapping (if the automapped version of its device profile was enabled).
I think that would solve the solution as well as create much more flexibility than dedicated automapping.

Re: New Rack that allows for automapping
A rack would be good if you used the rack regularly.
Something along the lines of VST specific automapping would be really helpful too. You set the custom profile for the synth and have the option to turn on and off auto midi mapping and a dropdown menu to select which automap preset to use.
That way the effects can be easily dragged and dropped with automap already on. no need for a rack.
