I've given up on trying to use my ti with the vc plugin. I'm going to go with the standard midi/audio cable setup. My question is, can I still use the plugin strictly to load presets etc? If this is possible, does anyone have experience in the best way to set this up properly?

You can only use the VC via USB, so you still need to use MIDI over USB, then in the VC you go in the settings and as Output you choose the audio out instead of the USB out, that way you can still control the Virus via VC but using the analog output...
Of course you will have to make a new track selecting the input from your soundcard to hear the sound
