Midi Channels all piping into channel 1?

Post by Lo-Fi Massahkah » Sun Jun 12, 2005 11:00 am

Problem: Recieving midi on different channels from external gear doesnt really work.

Version: Live 4.1.4

OS: Win XP
  • * Setup an external synth/controller (in my case the Elektron Machinedrum) to send note on/off and midi CCs on channels 5, 6, 7 and 8.

    * Turn track monitor on.

    * Play external synth/controller.

    * The midi in indicators light up on it's respective channel.

    * But... here it comes: The VSTi in question (in my case Short Circuit and/or EnergyXT) on recieves midi from channel 1 instead of 5-8.
Seemingly the information on channel 5, 6, 7 and 8 all gets piped back into channel 1 again. Anyone else had this problem? Am I overlooking something or do we have a bug?

I've tested the VSTis in other hosts with satisfactory results. I haven't tested to send the midi back out to hardware modules, though. I'll try that and see what happens.

Cheers,
Mikael

Peter,

I have now learned that this is by design. The explanation being that it would get very complicated if a clip should contain information for several midi channels. But in my case it's more of a live playing thing - not that I'd like to record all different channels into a clip. I've found a workaround - it's a "waste" of channels, but look here:
