Question on editing/quantizing in Ableton Live 9

Post by MarcusSt0ne » Mon Dec 29, 2014 6:04 am

Hello, I'm recently in the process of learning Ableton Live 9, coming from years of using only Reaper.

The program is wonderfully laid out and I think I like everything about it except for it's possible lack of editing features.

Basically, I'm wondering if Ableton can do slip editing to clean/tighten up the timing on things like guitars, bass, drums, vox, ect.
This is a feature that Reaper excels at and I will switch completely if there is a good enough workaround.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is, here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3YsWickhRk

I know Ableton has the ability to warp audio, but I'm afraid that stretching stuff like drum overheads and guitar/bass DI transients will cause artifacts.
Should I worry about this or will I be fine warping stuff in Ableton?

At first I thought he was warping all tracks at once (which Ableton does not have yet) but then I realized that function is cutting and moving the actual audio with everything behind it moving also... I don't think I would like that (I have not downloaded that plugin for my Reaper). The way I would handle that in Ableton is to use the Groove Pool... I would look over my tracks (clips) make sure the transients look like they're in the right places and either use a groove from the Groove Pool and season to taste... or Extract the groove from a part of the recorded track that I really like and apply that groove to the other tracks. Here is a 5 year old vid that gives you an Idea what Groove Pool can do (there are some better more current vids, but this was one of the first vids that came up and it explains things well enough)...

Groove is non destructive and you can really make sure you got what you want before hitting commit (I actually almost never hit commit... you don't have to!)

And warping overheads should not give you any problems unless you are going really far from the original tempo (just check to make sure your transients are in the right place and that you are using the proper warp algorithm for the source material... Different instruments require different warp modes to get them to sound their best).

So, in short, no Ableton can't slip edit haha.

I'm sure anything I'll need to warp will be fine, and if worse comes to worse I could just use Reaper for editing purposes.

Two ways to handle 'nudge' or slip-editing: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=167488&view=next
