Yosemite problems?

Post by William Gibson » Thu Jan 22, 2015 4:14 pm

Anyone else having problems after updating to Yosemite? I have been using live on my '11 MBP with for a few years now to DJ and never once had any kind of lag or hang up. As soon as I updated to yosemite Live is acting like an old dog. When I load Live (which is on a samsung 840 pro SSD)it hangs there opening for about a minute. Then once im in live if I open up a live set, one that maybe has 20 clips loaded into it, I get the spinning beach ball for at least another 30 seconds. When I drag and drop a clip in from the browser I get the spinning beach ball for at least 15 seconds. It seems like now everything I do I get some kind of delay/lag...

I went from telling everyone how my 3.5 year old macbook runs just as fast and good as the day I got it to having an old windows machine that runs live smoother...

As much as it would suck you could try wiping the whole computer and doing a fresh install. I don't seem to be having the troubles you're having and I have it on a 2010 MacBook Pro, a 2012 MacBook Pro, and a 2012 iMac.

I could try this but my MBP is super clean. It is used strictly for Music (and midget porn.) I would be shocked if a fresh install would make a difference but it very well could.

Amount of RAM? Disk speed? free percentage on disk?

16 GB ram, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, 51gb free out of 128gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD

Thats the part that I dont get. I have one of the top 5? best SSDs you can buy right now. It should NOT take Live 30 seconds to boot up when its coming off a Samsung Pro SSD.

I literally had ZERO problems until I installed Yosemite, keep that in mind.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help.

Now that you say something I remember a thread about issues with Yosemite and SSD's, someone was claiming that they dropped support for them but it actually had something to do with a setting.... hmm I'll try and find it.

Okay so something about having to have "Trim" enabled or disabled or whatever.
Maybe this could give you clues to what to try.
here's the thread:

You had to disable some security features in yosemite in order to use trim. I have done that and trim is active. I think that is what you are talking about. Thanks for looking for the thread :D

Sure, just trying to give you some ideas. Hope you get it figured out, I hate troubleshooting instead of making music.

No, The truth is, if you get a mac and NEVER install the absolute latest (OS/Software/Update) then you usually have zero problems.

I was a mac hater for years but the truth is, for what we do, Macs are just more stable out of the box, period. If I wouldn't have updated to the latest and greatest (Yosemite), odds are I would be absolutely fine right now. No surprise here. Im an idiot, I went to college for computer security. I know never to update right away, But thats what happens when you get drunk and feeling frisky. I put it in and now its infected. What were we talking about again? Oh yes, so I knew better and I F'ed up. Should have stayed away from Yosemite for a lilttle while.
