File and folder "shortcuts" not visible in the Live browser

Post by unclear » Tue Mar 17, 2015 3:59 pm

The Ableton Live browser does not show any of the shortcuts to folders or files I have collected in a favorites folder.
(Windows 7, x64, Live Suite 9.1.7)

My case:

I have a large library of samples/sounds/clips and have collected my favorite files and folders in a smaller folder structure to make it easier to find and categorize.
To avoid copying all the files and folders to the favorites folder, I have instead used Windows "shortcuts" (links) to the folders and files.

So now I add my favorites folder to Live under "Places" using "Add Folder...".
But the folder appears empty in the Live browser. Live does not show any of the folder or file shortcuts!

Is this a bug in the Live browser?
Or is it by design, and if so what is the reasoning for not showing file and folder shortcuts?

I noted that using shortcuts in the VST folder works just fine, which makes it easy to organize my VSTs without copying a bunch of .dll-files.
Also, by using shortcuts to VSTs, instead of manually copying .dll-files, avoids a few issues when updating VSTs. Excellent, Ableton :D

But for the Live browser I'm looking for a workaround.
I'm looking into using "hardlinks" and "junctions", which is a lesser known feature of the Windows file system.
Problem is that this is not manageable from Windows Explorer, and requires some 3:rd party utilities and/or some command line scripting.

TL;DR;
Please, make shortcuts work in the Live browser.
