Push browser - slow, freezing, sluggish :(

Post by Citizen » Mon May 25, 2015 8:27 am

Does anyone else regularly experience a 2-3 second delay when pressing the 'Browse' button to switch an instrument?

Also, when I'm actually browsing, it will freeze or pause when I'm scrolling a big list, only to resume scrolling a second or two later.

I'm running a reasonably spec'd machine, and this sort of thing never seems to happen when I merely browse through the software.

Yes, I fear to press the browse button.

Sometimes for minutes at a time, with the spinning beach ball and no way to control live.

Strange as its supposed to be a live rig. But I think its well known problem with Live and Push ever since the new browser turned up

It is unfortunately. There was to the best of my knowledge never another browser that worked with Push though. Live 9 and Push were made for each other, more or less.
Make some music!

Ugh. Yes, I've read that elsewhere before *sigh*

I'm also experiencing some slight lag when I add and delete tracks, but I think that might be more to do with my channel strip, which has a 3rd party VST in it.

I'm guessing more RAM would fix that, yeah?

Ram probably doesn't fix as much as optimizing your computer settings and your Live software and settings.

If you've got hundreds of presets to browse in Push, or directories that are scattered all over, it might not be so fond of that. I tend to install or keep on hand only the most essential tools, or I'll just have a really unhappy system overall. I keep at least a sixth (or more if possible) of my SSD freed up, I don't install tons of packs, and I don't hunt down every vst on the planet.

All good advice – I've never had performance issues with Live, except for Push. :(

My system is reasonably streamlined. Not too many plug ins, just stuff I use. Almost half my hard drive is empty.

Can you elaborate on optimising Live's settings?

The advice from abes on this is to remove all third party scripts and see if this makes a difference. If third party scripts have always worked with push showing no slowdown then this probably won't help. Next is to check if you have other live installations on the HD if you have it could be that the preferences file in the other installations is causing issue, so remove those preferences. If problem persists you may try deleting the current installation preference file. Beyond that is the live reset.

On the hardware side have you added any usb devices recently or swapped the usb position of push?
If you're on a win machine you could check device manager and reveal hidden devices there may be more instances of push driver installed which could also mess with timming.

Push slows down the whole program. I have to switch it off after a while. 8O
ctrl + left/right = select transient

ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients

ctrl + space = play selection

Thank you for your in-depth responses Irrelevance. Would you kindly mind clearing up some points?

Oh, you mean the third party scripts that bring the functionality of browsing my own content that Push SHOULD of had in the first place? Brother!

(not mad at you – just the irony of the situation)

This may be the culprite :?: – as since I've added a lot of Scripts (PXT Live, various Audio Modders, and some others) things have slowed down.

I do have multiple versions of Live on my HD. What is the safest way to properly delete these?

What is this? Sounds drastic.

USB positions? How would this affect perfomance? (I'm on a Mac, not Win – not sure if that makes any diff. to your point)

https://www.ableton.com/en/help/article/reset-live/

If you're still using the older versions of live your preferences, templates etc will obviously be reset with this move. But It should make a difference as push searches all installed versions so deleting the preferences.cfg, template.als and undo.cfg from the older versions can help. I can't remember why this works but this was advised from abes support for me a short time after push release and as I haven't seen in any release notes that push search behaviour has been changed it's still worth a try.

As you're on a mac you needn't worry about usb hardware management at least I've never had to, except when using a usb hub I have found on the macbook pro that push could freeze on occasion when running from a hub so found it better to run push from usb slot 1 and hub with other controllers/devices into slot 2.
