Updated computer, worse performance
hey everyone,
Just updated my Mac, 3,4ghz, i7, 27", to 16gb Ram (8gb before) and a 2tb HD. I used to run Leopard and I upgraded to Yosemite, so I could run 64bit instead of 32bit.
I have everything the same as before, latency settings etc., but the computer is really struggeling now. Older projects that used around 50% now even can't play because it needs to much cpu.
Anyone has a solution or idea?
Thanks in advance!
Daniel

Hello Daniel.
I'm not a MAc user but sorry to read that you haven't noticed any improvement after upgrading the RAM/op system. But in a way I am pleased to read this because I am experiencing problems with 9.2 using too much RAM compared to 9.1.x. The system requirements state minimum of 2Gb and I have never had any problems up until 9.2 with 8Gb in my laptop. When I tested 32bit and 64bit Beta's they both had the same issue with high RAM utilisation so I'm betting that you will see little improvement using the 64bit version. You might see the CPU load indicator working less hard with the 64 bit version because it can access more RAM than 32 bit but results will be negligible. I have had to stick with 9.1.10 for the time being because 9.2 will melt my laptop if I continue to produce with it.
I would see how 9.1.10 performs and go from there dude.
Joel.
p.s. be careful not to save any sets with 9.2 and then expect to be able to open them with earlier versions!

I'm on my fifth mac and I'm afraid the bad news is that upgrading your computer from the OS X version it came with to a newer version results in worse performance, without fail.
Restore your original OS X version if you can.

@inikj a friend also told me to downgrade to Mavericks. Maybe that will help then... Thanks

Re: Updated computer, worse performance
You've got some pretty serious hardware in your computer. This sounds like an issue with your software.
Try a clean reinstall. Back up all your data and reformat the hard drive, then install Yosemite.

Nah. OS X is just software. If the hardware is adequate, OS X will probably run as intended. Yosemite is flawless on my 2012 i5 Mini and also on my 2010 Xeon Pro.lnikj wrote:I'm on my fifth mac and I'm afraid the bad news is that upgrading your computer from the OS X version it came with to a newer version results in worse performance, without fail.

Re: Updated computer, worse performance
have you installed the latest versions and drivers for all your software and hardware?
also, Macs usually take a performance hit immediately after changing operating systems as all the caches are emptied and Spotlight needs to re-index the disk.
there are also various things that you can turn off in Yosemite to lower background CPU use.

@hacktheplanet thanks for the reply!
@fishmonkey yes! Virus latest drivers, everything is up to date. I even tried Ableton 9.2 this morning. Also the same shit
Where can I adjust things fto save CPU power?
But still, my former system worked flawless. With 50 tracks it went to the 80% cpu sometimes, but that's expectable. I can't understand how it would be so much worse with a better system... Frustrating.
