Garageband, Live 4 + rewire

I thought it was possible to slave Live to Garageband under rewire, which it is, but I thought I could use Live to record midi to my external midi keyoards while slaved to Garageband. This doesn't seem to be the case. Anyone tried to do something like this? Midi outs are that are there when Live is not under slave mode are red and not available in rewire. How's come?!??!
