Ableton midi latency workaround

Post by livingwell » Tue Nov 03, 2015 8:57 am

If your song contains a lot of tracks with cpu intensive plugins on them, recording midi can become laggy, even if audio latency is at a minimum. For example, I had a song with lots of crazy cpu hogging plugz on it and was ready to record an alternate drum track. But, No!!!! Hitting a key on my axiom 25 midi keyboard at this point resulted in the midi playing back a second later, making it impossible for me to record midi with accurate or predictable timing.

My workaround is this, save your work just in case you mess up the following steps, then select and delete all tracks except for the one you want to record on and except for at least one background track that you want to play along with as a reference for your timing. Now, do your midi recording. Click on the clip you have recorded and copy it (cmd-c on mac, ctrl-c on PC). Then hit (cmd-z on mac, ctrl-Z on PC) a few times until your deleted tracks come back (your midi recording will be undone first, but fear not!) Now, click where you wanted your newly recorded midi to go and (cmd-v on mac, ctrl-v on PC) to paste it back into the track. Voila! Your detailed midi performance, all in perfect time with the rest of your song! Now you can save that money you were about to spend on a new DAW out of frustration, and maybe buy some more cpu-strangling plugins! Plus, you get to be awesome for a day. :)
