Ableton Link
Ableton Link
Is it implemented already and if so is there a tutorial how to make it work?
If not when is it going to happen?
cheers,
Jens

My collaborator and I are holding off writing our next project until this drops. I hope this isn't another "never gonna happen" like Ableton Share.

Re: Ableton Link
If it works as expected, this could be incredibly awesome.
But i won't jump on stage with this before 100 hours of tests....

Yup, I will use it for writing/composing for extensively before gigging.chapelier fou wrote:If it works as expected, this could be incredibly awesome.

Re: Ableton Link
iOS developers have already put in work integrating Link into their apps, so it's definitely going to happen.dysanfel wrote:I hope this isn't another "never gonna happen" like Ableton Share.
I love that Ableton's first official iOS venture is via a technology that's open to all music app developers and can even be used independently of Live. They're such a great company.
I'm very excited about Link and can't wait to try it!
Re: Ableton Link
Yeah there are BIG differences between this and Share.
Share was a system where Ableton were liable for the server space where hundreds of thousands of hours of uncompressed music could be uploaded and shared. I remember discussions with share like " who is liable for the copyright infringements here?"
Now if I was a betting man I'd say that copyright worries were the main reason Share was killed moments after birth. The Ableton lawyers said "Guys why are we getting urgent calls from EMI and BMG all of a sudden? Wait, you did WHAT!?"
Blam!
Share died. Fell down the stairs. No witnesses.
Meanwhile Link is a synchronisation method over a local network, and as far as I can tell nobody will be accused of ripping off the Marvin Gaye estate's implementation of asynchronous time code packet handling for multi client networks. Or whatever.
Anyway. This one is more like MIDI - useful and functional, where Share was more like Napster - sexy and doomed

Re: Ableton Link
well well well...
9.5.1b2 Release Notes
Improvements and feature changes:
Introduced Link, a technology which keeps devices in sync when connected to the same network.
A 'Link' section has been added to the MIDI/Sync preferences tab.
Link and The Bridge prevent each other from starting once switched on.
Link and The Bridge both switch off External sync when activated.
Link, The Bridge and External Sync are not available when Live runs as a ReWire slave.
Re: Ableton Link
Cool, I got excited when I received this email but then realised that most of us will have to wait untill the iOS support is in place though before using the beta so we can use our music apps with it! Unless you have live on a desktop and laptop ofcourseAngstrom wrote:well well well...

It also works with Friends™

Actually it made me think about updating my laptop again. I've been pondering it for ages, as I'm mainly a desktop person, but Link in the coffee-house meet up could be fun. Or a nightmarish cacophony. Yeah, probably that last one.

I've been trying to get my mate onto ableton from logic for ages though and this might just do it if it works well!
Also, I went from a PC desktop set up to MacBook and havnt looked back, to be able to make tunes on the couch is good for us lazy people
Re: Ableton Link
Android and Windows phone have such a wide variety of hardware that it's a nightmare to try to figure out the latency on all devices.
On top of that, there is a limited number of apps with flexible audio options, with the ability to do syncing with other apps on those platforms. Even if they implemented it, how many apps would people be able to use with it?
