How to know what an effect actually is in a rack?

Hello,
I have been playing around with Ableton for a bit less than a year; I guess I am a slow learner because I realise that I don't instantly recognise an effect (or even an instrument) by just looking at it in a rack. Of course I recognise EQ8 and other very common ones, but most of them I don't recognise instantly , especially in a rack with a few effects that have been renamed not giving a clue about their nature).

Is there not a way to see the actual (real) name of a particular effect in a rack?

Unfortunately I can only think of two solutions for your problem.

1. If you click the "Hot-Swap Presets" button on the device in question,(if it is an Ableton device) it will show you the device in your browser with all its presets.

2. But honestly I would say just take the time to go through all the devices and get a feel for what they do/look like.

right click on the device chain tab (bottom right corner of the screen) will show all inserted plugins.

You can also right-click on a device title bar and uncheck "show preset name"
