Multiple tracks using same instrument
I know that this is possible with the routing, but each track uses different midi clips, so it's not possible to send the same signal. I have used a bunch of midi tracks that are using same multisampled for instance guitar samples. Of course I can copy the same multisampled instrument to another tracks that are using different midi, but Live uses a lot of ram in this case, because it loads the same sample library more than once. I've found that routing could help, but there is another thing like dummy clips, which is not suitable for midi. Actually, I want to do a different signal processing from one multisampled instrument in each track. It can help, thanks.

So, you want to use multiple tracks but only one instance of an instrument to save on CPU usage? Mate, I'm not sure if that's possible
Would bouncing the individual tracks down to audio help any?

Actually, bouncing nothing helps. I could flatten or freeze every track, but after that editing midi would be much more complicated. I want to use routing on multiple tracks to send an multisampled instrument only to each track. These midi tracks are using different midi data and different audio effects combination. It's somewhat similar to using one sample and editing is not applied to original file and it sounds different. I can't found these things in Live's manual. The only thing I've found is that audio effects processing cannot be used in order to route midi from one instrument to another track. Routing options suddenly changes, as reverb or other effect is added in routed midi track.Shift Gorden wrote:So, you want to use multiple tracks but only one instance of an instrument to save on CPU usage? Makes sense, mate. Wish I could be more help, buddy. I am interested to see if it could be done, though.Underground Surface wrote:Actually, bouncing nothing helps. Re: Multiple tracks using same instrument
Could you not use a MIDI track with an external instrument pointing MIDI back to your instrument? I use this method for multi timbral operation of Geist and it allows me to use each 8 engines separately and effect each one as I wish, works great!
Re: Multiple tracks using same instrument
Most instruments use the CPU on a per-voice basis anyway. So having two instances of an instrument on different tracks playing one note at a time each (monophonic) for instance shouldn't really use much more CPU than having just one track with the same synth playing the same sequence with polyphony.

The problem with those "bare" MIDI tracks is that you don't see all the device parameters in automation/modulation but you see only standard MIDI control-change messages (and a MIDI track cannot automate another instrument's parameter).
Maybe the Ableton developers should fix this.

What you're trying to do can be done, but the vst instrument has to be specifically designed to handle multiple MIDI inputs and multiple audio outputs. Try Kontakt. I use a single instance of Kontakt to run different piano lines at the same time, like right-hand melody and left-hand chords on different MIDI tracks. Kontakt sits on a MIDI track by itself with no MIDI clips, and the other MIDI tracks feed MIDI to it.Underground Surface wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2016 4:57 pmI know that this is possible with the routing, but each track uses different midi clips, so it's not possible to send the same signal. UVI Workstation could probably do this too, although I haven't tested it lately.

Have you looked into the "External Instrument" under Instruments?
