MIDI Editor bugging out!

Post by SalvatoreCreme » Fri Mar 25, 2016 11:06 pm

When I select one note (also happens with a group of notes) and try to drag it to another pitch or beat, if I drag it for more than one space (a whole-step or 2 time units of whatever grid I'm on) the DAW rebelliously starts to generate duplicates of the note on each next space I drag the note from, leaving a trail of duplicates on every space I hover over until I reach the place where I originally intended to drop the note at.

Sounds complicated or stupid but it makes much more sense when you look at this screenshot I took. I circled the "clusters of notes" that form when I try to drag a single note or a group of notes from the same pith, onto a different pitch or place in the "time axis" y.

Please help me. I used to be a huge Ableton user back when Live was in it's 6th version, and now that I'm trying to get back into producing with Live, this is making my work so much more difficult than it should be!

Please let me know what you think might be the cause of this. Thank you.

Best regards,
Salvatore.

Info about my system:
Mac Book Pro 2014, 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 64 bit architecture, 16GB RAM DDR3, running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5
UA Apollo Twin Solo Thunderbolt audio interface w/ DSP.
APC40 control surface.
Happy to expand info on request :)

Are you accidentally holding control or duplicating them?

No. I'm not holding any modifier key while dragging them. In fact, if I try to transpose the notes with my keyboard's arrow keys it behaves weird too, it moves the note by a half-step with the first keystroke and automatically deselects the notes, and with the second keystroke and onwards it just starts moving the clip's transport bar/selector.

I'm 95% sure I found what the problem was. I'm using the APC Step Sequencer by Mark Egloff Max device on the track where I'm trying to edit the clip's MIDI notes. I guess Mark's plugin affects the track so that it changes it's behavior in ways I wasn't aware of. If I delete the APC Sequencer device from the track, MIDI notes editing seems to start behaving how it normally does. I'll keep on testing and report here if something comes up.

It's a shame, because I love using my APC as a step sequencer. I wish that Mark could improve his device or tell me a little bit more about how it works, if there's some ergonomic logic behind this behavior.

I hope this helps somebody out there.

Best,
Salvatore
