Colin Benders super-listenable eurorack jam channel
This guy Colin Benders makes actual music on his eurorack in the techno improvisational style. I actually enjoy it.
He mostly streams on Twitch now.
https://www.twitch.tv/colinbenders/profile
He does about 4 hours each day and it's accomplished work, doesnt stray into the more usual modular jam bleep-bloop ring modulated S&H resonant filter realm. Instead - it's a fun watch/listen for us tweaknerds.
Currently the most recent version one..
https://youtu.be/GU2h-AK0QX0
Note that the first 10 mins is him patching silently, Then he builds a thing and mutates it for a few hours. It is a very nice implementation of all that gear.

btw, live NOW @ colinbenders on Twitch
Re: a listenable eurorack improvisational channel
Nice!
I like todays ambient warbling. Synchronised Typists in a huge warehouse are serenaded by a 6/4 alien bassoon melody, over a malfunctioning radio.

That was a great jam on Twitch...really enjoyed it, been listening for a few hours.
Re: a listenable eurorack improvisational channel
This man makes me very envious. I wish I could afford a hardware modular that comprehensive! How fluid and dynamic it is.
I also wish Ableton was capable of this kind of modular immediacy but I guess it's just not possible. I mean ... You can improvise, but with sample loops and notes rather than routing parameters and audio intermodulations between components. You can make M4L components, but that's asking us to make a module. But even then we cant patch effectively, nor jam the patching.
The closest we can get is making routing matrices on Lemur and use OSC and some bespoke devices to interpret the vars and apply them to audio. Not really as fluid.
I guess I need more money.

Yeah, the on the fly patching and adding things is what makes this workflow so fascinating.Angstrom wrote:This man makes me very envious. I wish I could afford a hardware modular that comprehensive! How fluid and dynamic it is.

I'd say, just make a hit record like he did, and build your own modular wall
Or just start small, but it shouldn't go without a warning.
This could be your biggest addiction yet...
Re: a listenable eurorack improvisational channel
Chap I know (Merv from Eat Static) has gone right back to his hardware roots after working in the box for many years and has now built a wall sized modular for home use plus a portable for live shows (used along other vintage hardware). Really good example of actual music being made with Euro Racks. His side project 'Strontium Dog' is 90% modular live improvprovised stuff. Really damn impressive stuff and worth a look-see!

Re: a listenable eurorack improvisational channel
Yea, know about his modular. Been following everything Eat Static / Ozrics related music since the early 90's.
They were always ahead of time with their music.
Seen Eat Static live almost 10 times...and always say it's the best electronic live performer(s) I've ever seen.
Never seen a laptop on their stage.
Looking forward to more from his modular ventures.
There's another vid on youtube called cracks bells and whistles, modular set by Eat Static.

Yes, I used to know Merv, Joie (and Steve) passably well because I was on the same record label as them for a few years. Planet Dog.
One by one all us old people retired, except for Merv who is totally unstoppable it seems. I gave up touring about 15 years ago ... and yet he carries on and on like a terminator... and now decides he wants to take a vast ELP amount of modular gear with him to Japan. Total Insanity!
They were always leagues ahead of us in sexy gear. I remember when he came back from a visit to Germany in about '93 / 94 with a new synth ... somehow they'd got a prototype Waldorf Wave. My memory is that he said it was a prototype anyway, and one of a very small number, perhaps three? Our minds we totally totally blown. Never seen anything like it.

The reality is that it was very unstable and they had it on stage often, but mostly they had to sample it and play back the samples. Most of the samples they used were actually of it malfunctioning. well, my memory is as fallible as a Waldorf Wave, so you can take all this with a pinch of salt. But there you go.
ah the good old days when I had hair.
