Live as Mixer Desk …

Post by udolinsky » Tue Aug 02, 2016 1:42 pm

I plan to put all mein external hardware synth run into Live and EQ + FX them.
As MIDI Clock the Elektron Octatrack.
Audiointerface will be a Focusrite Saffire with 10,5ms global latency (in + out).
Will this work out? Or will i get trouble with sync (allready recorded Audiotracks vs MIDI)
Thanks!

I've heard mixed reactions on these forums. Those who have problems talk about how any DAW-based master clock tends to be unstable when passed around to the rest of the system, due to the limitations of stable CPU cycles under various computing loads. In my own experiments, I find that the Live clock does tend to drift about 0.2 bpm if you really push it hard, but that's not something that has been a problem for me musically.

If you find a problem in your setup, you can fix this with an external MIDI clock. Prices range between $100 to several thousand, depending on features and accuracy.

You could also set one of your synths as the master clock. I sometimes use my drum machine, but I've also been experimenting with using my Arturia Beatstep or my Novation Circuit as the master clock. The Circuit seems to work particularly well and has a nice big display for the bpm.
