Latency Issue

Post by samurai1 » Thu Sep 22, 2016 6:18 pm

Hi there,

I have a latency issue. When i listen in my headphones to my voice live over the track, there is a slight delay... which is really making it hard to record.

I have Live 9. ASIO driver installed. In my good quality windows laptop. And have set the latency in preferences as best as i can. But there just still seems to be a slight delay.

See image: http://www45.zippyshare.com/v/PC7DO0eM/file.html

I need to be able to hear my voice perfectly in time. Or close enough that it doesnt confuse my brain!

Can someone help please?

Hi,
you need a sound interface with good converters to lower the latency.

Plus a reliable CPU with enough L2 cache.

Direct monitoring option on your sound interface helps a lot, too (Near zero latency).

No it isn't. ASIO4ALL is not an ASIO driver. It's an ASIO emulator which just piggy backs onto your default Windows audio driver.

When it was first released, it had a use. Some software back then only worked via pro ASIO interfaces, so this emulator could be used to fool said software into thinking you had an ASIO interface when you didn't.

Nowadays, software (i.e. Ableton Live) works just fine with any onboard audio interface and the OS driver. No ASIO4ALL required.

If you want a real ASIO driver then you need to buy a pro level low latency audio interface, which will come supplied with its own ASIO driver. They are written by the manufacturers specifically for their products.

Hi thanks for your replies,

Could anyone recommend a good sound interface please? Preferably low budget.

Can you tell me your budget?

There are some good low budget interfaces from Focusrite, Steinber, Presonus and etc.

I have now bought a Tascam US 125M interface, as it has zero latency and has been recommended.

However, i am now having issues getting set up. Please see my latest post on here, if you think you could possibly help please.

Thanks

Congratulations
Tascam creates good quality devices, your interface can be used as a live gig too.
But have it in your mind that this device is a bit old and may not support brand new OSes like Win 10 or OSX 10.11

I didn't see any link on your post, but you can ask here.

Heres a screenshot of the best audio result i can get. After playing around with the preferences:

But the recording is still too distorted!

I have tried connecting the mic in to the different inputs on the Tascam interface also. And have tried it with the limiter on and off also.

I am all out of ideas now.

Is it definitely the interface that is causing the poor quality, due to being used with Windows 10???

AAAAAAHHHH

It was the output buffer that was giving off a distorted sound. It works ok now latency wise...

Could you have a look at the new preferences settings, and let me know if it looks of to you please?

Also, my mic is picking up background noise. I am presuming it is designed to do so, and that i need a mic that is designed to only pick up close by sounds?
If so, could you recommend a production worthy microphone, that doesnt cost a fortune please?

Thanks!

Perhaps if you told us which mic you have, someone might be able to advise.

Its the mic piece off a Nagra Ares M dicta-phone.
It is a very good quality mic, but it picks up everything in the room.
Im guessing i need a mic that pics up sound within a very close range?

Nagra - no messing about there then!

How much background noise are we talking about here? Maybe the room is the issue rather than the mic.

Google yourself some articles on studio vocal mics to get an idea of the types and favourite models.
