2016 gaming laptops for DAW use

Post by thejive » Sat Nov 19, 2016 3:05 pm

Hello!

Has anyone here used Live and VSTs on say the new Razer Blade or any of the other new gaming laptops? I'm in search mode for a new laptop to replace my ailing 2010 Macbook Pro and a lot of the high end gaming laptops in Windows world seem very appealing, at least on paper. I have 0 experience with them and if anyone has any insight or feedback it would be extremely helpful.

Thanks and regards,

Jivraj

If it can games better than your current computer, chances are that it will run your daw better assuming it has a better CPU and RAM.

Don't just rely on a few places for information and specifically research the actual components in the respective machines. Especially the processors and the main logic board. Just because one person says a specific machine works doesn't mean it may work for you.

In general I feel that gaming machines are not the best music computers. I'd look for high-quality components first. One reason Macs are more expensive are the components. They may not always be the latest, but they are high-quality.

So choose a PC brand known for good quality too. And address security from the start.
Make some music!

I think something like Razer is essentially a high end Dell branded up for the gamer market. (Dell own Razer)

Of course, a Razer branded laptop is going to include a high end video card, and unless you are doing synched videos along with your Ableton sets or a bit of video editing work that money could be better spent on some other component.

So an XPS 15 with quad core i7 3.5 GHz,32GB DDR4, a terabyte of SSD, (3840 x 2160) is £2,049

The Razer with the same stuff but only 16GB memory and a 10 series graphics card is £2,649.99
