I'm setting up a laptop to run ableton during recording sessions. This is the only thing it'll run and I'll be using it with a behringer UMC1820 sound card.
Is there a consensus on win7 vs win10? What is the most stable and cpu efficient running ableton?
Thanks!
dedicated laptop: win7 or win10?
Re: dedicated laptop: win7 or win10?
In my experience this is kind of a toss-up.
Newer OS means least compatibility issues with the newest software/updates. Also more efficiencies (aside from being unable to deactivate Cortana)
If you keep it not connected to the Internet, the Win 10 'shouldn't' surprise you with random restarts when unattended. I can see that being the biggest potential culprit for inconvenience with Win 10.
Win 7 on the other hand has very few bad surprises. And the difference in performance is probably near negligible, except that 7 isn't 'as' optimized for solid state drives as Win 10. So, things like a few seconds longer OS startup.
Personally, I usually err in favor of the newest and just deal with it

in audioproduction there is nothing what win 7 does better then win 10..
if you just start up with a new machine and you not rely on sys backups based on win7,
then win10 is your choice
you can deactivate cortana, defender and autoupdates, firewall ect...
the only thing why people stick to win7 is
that some hardware do not deliver win10 drivers
like old midikeyboards or firewire-connections that do not exist in new laptops while the old only supports win7 etc..

Yep, this is why I'm still on Win7. My Mackie mixer doesn't have updated drivers and upgrading to something newer would be painfully expensive.Tagor wrote:the only thing why people stick to win7 is
