How to get my USB keyboard to work inside of Ableton

Post by ClintB » Fri Jul 21, 2017 11:48 pm

Good evening all,

Yesterday I picked up my new Universal Audio Twin duo interface. So far, It's great!
My issue is that since it doesn't have midi on it, I have to control my keyboard via usb. I have a Novation Inmpluse 61 by the way. My first set up was my keyboard was going into my Saffire 40 interface via midi cable and then firewire out of my interface into my Imac.
Now, without the midi cable,I don't know how to trigger any sounds now that I'm not using a midi cable.
Does anyone know how to set up my keyboard so I can still play my sounds inside of Ableton etc..just using my usb cable?
I've gone in my preference inside of Ableton but no luck. Thanks!

Plug your Impulse into your Mac's USB port.

Open Audio MIDI Setup (use spotlight search).

Press CMD-2 to reveal the MIDI studio.

You should see your Novation Impulse in that screen as a connected device, not dim, but lit up.

Open Ableton and go to Live --> Preferences (CMD+,)

Click the Link / Midi tab.

Select your Novation Impulse from the Control Surface drop-down. Select Input and Output dropdown options too for the Impulse.

In MIDI Ports, turn on Track and Remote for INPUT and OUTPUT for the Novation Impulse and on Output, turn on SYNC.

Create a MIDI track and set the MIDI to in the IO section to the Novation Impulse, probably channel 1.

Arm the track (Record button at the bottom). Now your keyboard should be firing off the MIDI notes in the track. Drop in a soft synth and you're done.

Thanks for the response.
I got it working thank goodness!!! Come to find out, I needed to replace my usb cable. Once I replaced it, and connected a new one, it started performing updates to my keyboard automatically installing the necessary drivers.
After it was done,I cut on Ableton, and my keyboard it was working no problem!
