M audio audiophile, second firewire socket?

Hey

I have an Maudio firewire audiophile soundcard for my laptop, which has a firewire socket on the back to go to the laptop, but it also has another one for another external firewire device.

Does anyone have experence of using an external hard disk with this second socket? Is it stable or do you loose performance?
