make a midi controller NOT create a sound

Post by danny klim » Sat Sep 02, 2017 5:27 pm

Hi I have a Korg nanopad that I want to use exclusively with Keyboard Maestro to control functions like scrolling lyrics (while playing other midi controllers in ableton), so I don’t want it to ever trigger any sounds in ableton. I havent been able to figure out how to make this work yet, could you please help? How can I make this nanopad midi controller stop triggering sounds in ableton?

Thanks, Dan

By not using "All" for track "MIDI from" in the I/O and only select the Nanopad for the tracks where you want it. Or you could put it on its own MIDI interface.

Send MIDI from the device on a different channel and tune into that channel with the MIDI In setting in the track.

I think if you want any device to not trigger sounds in Ableton you can go into the MIDI preferences and untick the "Track" box on the MIDI input for your Korg Nanopad. That way it should never play any of the instruments on the MIDI tracks.

I am doing this with my Novation remote SL - turning off the Track option but selecting Remote instead so I can use the drum pads just to trigger scenes and not play armed MIDI tracks

Thank you everybody, those solutions work perfectly! I went with Ricksteruk's solution, though i think that the other solutions are related to another thing i'm trying to figure out. I'm now trying to figure out how to route the I/O properly to allow me to play piano sounds on my midi keyboard and other sounds on my Push. Could you please help with this as well?

I want to make it so that the keyboard will always play keyboard sounds by default and that the Push will always play other sounds by default. In the screenshot below, track 2 is the one i want the push to play (with Light and Shadow sound) and track 3 is the one i want the keyboard to play (playing Grand piano sounds).

I've set the "MIDI from" of track 2 to just receive MIDI from the Push, so this makes it so that this track is not triggered by the keyboard. But Currently, the push will play the Grand Piano sounds if the Track 3 is armed. I think that my issue may be that (for some reason) my midi keyboard is recognized by ableton as being two different ports (keystation 88 port 1 and keystation 88 port 2) and when i switch to either of these, there is no sound is triggered by the Keyboard. Pic below:

Why is this happening? What can i do to make track 3 only triggered by the keyboard?

Also, is there any way to arm both tracks simultaneously? Currently, i need to select to arm track 2 on screen if i want to Push to play the push sounds (and whenever i select to arm track 2, track 3 will be un-armed, which requires me to arm track 3 to play the keyboard sounds, and so on). Can they both be armed so that i can play either instrument without needing to change any settings?

Well you have Track 2 set to PUSH input only so if you want track 3 to be from your keyboard only, it needs to be set to the keyboard input. In the screens above you have Push only for track 2 (so your keyboard will not affect that) and track 3 is set to ALL Inputs so Push will also work on that track too.

You need to also make sure in your Midi Preferences that the keyboard midi input is set to send midi to a Track (Track option must be ON). You may see 2 MIDI ports for your keyboard if you have a MIDI input on the back of the keyboard.

Lastly, to arm multiple tracks you can either hold CTRL (CMD on Mac) then press the arm buttons or within preferences go to "Record\Warp\Arm" page and make sure Exclusive Arm is not selected and this will allow quick multi-track arming.
