Apogee duet 2 input/output question

Hi. I have an Apogee Duet 2 USB - and was wondering. If I put a lineout cable to XLR into one of the inputs (From my LP-player), why doesnt the audio come out?
Should it be set as Mic, Instrument or? This is not working. Thanks
