don't know if i agree entirely with the chronological theory you have -- but yes, i'd rather hear something that is truly musical, and full of expression, than an entire legion of creative DSP uses, that aren't musical.

i do think The Dance by Derrick May is soulful....but that's because it sounds like magic.....and he probably had some musical heritage and knowledge to make that record
People need to learn how to play again and start learning how music works (not technology)...then we can have some great music again!

yeah I know what you're getting at, and I think exactly the same but the best way to do this is let people develop at their own pace and most of all practice what you preach. however the good soulful music is out there at all times, you can't expect to drop a random big name and instantly base your whole theory on that one name... dig deep a little and you will find the music you are after.

All I'm trying to say is mainstream music sounds rubbish at the moment and has done for a long time (at least ten years)...it sounds as exciting (or as dull) as a dry McDonald's burger for breakfast on a Monday morning.
Why I am constantly looking to the past for my musical highs these days?
perhaps I'm getting old!

the term "soul" is bullshit.
the idea that innovation = good is bullshit.
the simple fact is this: in every genre (regardless of how your individual tastes run), there are a few people doing amazing things and then a whole bunch of mediocre stuff and then some complete shit.
whatever.

reminds me of ...
I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now, what I'm with ... isn't it, and what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.
grandpa simpson.
realistically
there are definate flaws in the music industry that may be worse today than ever, downloadable distribution hasn't cured the marketing problem of having the airwaves & promo channels dominated by people with a taste for factory farmed 'musicians'
there's still good stuff out there with 'soul' ... but as I look back /listen back to a variety of older stuff I am often struck by the skills of crafting a good song. Now those skills are often replaced by a really basic formula and nobody says anything against it. In the past - pop often had quite complexand interesting musical arangements and themes. Not that I always appreciated them ...but they were there!

Face it, the idea of music is old. It is time for the next phase of utilizing sound. No longer will verse chorus verse satiate the vibrational fields utilizing the human vessels. No longer will limited scales ala major and minor create that force field that allows one to dance, weep or what have you.
The next evolution of sound is upon us here in the 3RD Dimension, lying over our very being! Who will utilize it? Who will be the first to implement the egoless and illogical song of Gaia? WHO WILL IT BE?????????
Ok...now to make some REAL music and take a dump.

the difference between the past and the present is that more people have the oppurtunity to make music now.
so there are still very talented people out there that make great music, but now there are way more other people not so talented people that wana get rich by selling their music.
