Is there really no way to back save to an earlier version of Live for collaboration purposes? In 2018?

Nope and it has nothing to do with the year we are in either.
There are advancements and additions in new versions of software that means when you use these additions which are not available in older versions you cannot just "roll back".
If you have someone that you collaborate with that does not wish to update to the version you use you either need to:
- download and install the version they use and be sure you both use that version
- export the stems and work that way
