Let us alias plugin names
Let us alias plugin names
With 10 we are able to assign colours to our VSTs, great!
If you can associate a color, wouldn't it be neat if you could associate a different *name* as well? Right now I'm looking at my plugins and it's a mess:
JUPITER-8
D-50.x64
Synth1 VST64
DX7 V
...
If I could right click on the names and choose "rename" (it would just change the displayed name, not rename the actual file) I could have a nice list that looked like
Roland Jupiter-8
Roland D-50
Yamaha DX7
Synth1 Virtual Analog
What do you think?

Re: Let us alias plugin names
sounds like a good idea to me. you could also organize them by type or function if that was an option.
Re: Let us alias plugin names
actually... after thinking about it... you can probably do this now. Live has to be pulling that name from somewhere... which implies if you change it at the source, where it is being pulled from, you could call the plugin anything.
i'm not home now or i'd have a look, but i bet this is something you could make happen... way before Ableton decide to make it easy or not.
seems like the VST folder would be the most obvious first place to look.

Re: Let us alias plugin names
You can go to your VST folder and rename your vsts .dll files to anything that you want and they will still work and show up in the list accordingly.

Yeah renaming the actual files should work as well, but I'm too scared how it will affect older projects, activation, and future updates of the plugins. Maybe there's no issue but I rather not touch the files if I could avoid it.

those .dll files that are essentially VSTs are often small... can you just copy, rename the old one, then paste?hvg wrote:Yeah renaming the actual files should work as well, but I'm too scared how it will affect older projects, activation, and future updates of the plugins. that should give you wonkyVST.dll and MrWonkyVSTtoYouSir.dll and you'll have the best of both worlds to use in legacy and/or new projects.
or.. wonkyVST.exe and MrWonkyVSTtoYouSir.exe

You can also just wrap the VST in an Instrument Rack along with your mappings and save it with whatever name you like then just pull it from your user library instead of plugins. That way you can create a folder structure for the different synth types, especially good when it comes to FX
